George Howe produced the first locally published book in Australia in 1802. Originally from the West Indies, Howe was convicted of shoplifting in England and sent to Australia in November 1800.
Because of his printing experience George Howe was quickly put to work at the government press. From his humble shed at the rear of Government House, he was permitted to produce the Australia’s first newspaper The Sydney Gazette and New South Wales Advertiser. The first publication was on 5 March 1803.
