Rugby league began in 1895, teams were reduced from 15 to 13 players. In the 1908 season, the first Kangaroos (League) toured Great Britain. In 1910 rugby league became the premier winter sport for NSW and Queensland, expanding to other states and New Zealand.

The State of Origin is one of the biggest annual sports events in Australia. First played in 1980, the three-game NRL series is between Queensland and New South Wales.

The NRL team, the Kangaroos represents Australia in international competitions.
