There are 39 accredited Australian government approved universities in Australia. Of these, all but two are publicly funded with 1 Australian branch of an overseas university. Did you know the first university established in Australia was the University of Sydney in 1850. By 2007, it had 45,182 students and 3,018 (full-time equivalent) academic staff making it the second largest university in Australia.
