Historical Daylight Saving Dates

Daylight Saving Time (DST) had its beginning in Australia during World War I when the Commonwealth used its wartime powers to require all Australian states and territories to put it into place.

1917 was officially the first year DST was used across the country. Since 1942 some states have opted out of observing Daylight Savings Time.

It is the responsibility of individual state and territory governments to decide when and if Daylight Saving will be implemented locally. As you can see in the chart below, DST has varied throughout the years.

All Daylight Saving Time changes took place at 0200 Local Standard Time.
