29 January -Joern Utzon and Australian Icon "Opera House"

Danish architect Joern Utzon is named as the winner of the competition for the new Sydney Opera House.

in Sydney Harbour was declared a World Heritage Site on 28 June 2007.

It has become one of the most famous performing arts venues in the world.

NSW Premier at the time, Joseph Cahill, called for designs for a dedicated opera house, and it was Danish architect Utzon who was announced as the winner from among 233 entries, on 29 January 1957.

Sydney's Second Icon
Utzon arrived in Sydney to oversee the project in 1957 and work commenced on the opera House in 1959.

The building was completed in 1973, at a cost of $102 million, and formally opened by Queen Elizabeth II on 20 October 1973.


In 17 May 1985, Utzon was made an honorary Companion of the Order of Australia (AC).

Never seen it completed
Utzon died in Copenhagen on 29 November 2008, aged 90, of a heart attack in his sleep after a series of operations. He had never returned to Australia to see the completed opera house.
