    Van Diemen's Land
was the original name used by most Europeans for the island of Tasmania, now part of Australia.

The Dutch explorer Abel Tasman was the first European to land on the shores of Tasmania. Landing at Blackman's Bay and later having the Dutch flag flown at North Bay

In 1856 the colony was granted responsible self-government with its own representative parliament.

The name of the island and colony was officially changed to Tasmania on 1 January 1856.
  • 1954 – Australia becomes a founding member of Southeast Asia Treaty Organization (SEATO).

    The South East Asia
Treaty Organization (SEATO) was an international organization for collective defense in Southeast Asia created by the Southeast Asia Collective Defense Treaty, or Manila Pact, signed in September 1954 in Manila,Philippines.

Primarily created to block further communist gains in Southeast Asia.

SEATO is generally considered a failure because internal conflict and dispute hindered general use of the SEATO military

SEATO was dissolved on 30 June 1977 after many members lost interest and withdrew.

  • 2006 – Motor racing champion Peter Brock dies in a race in Perth.
