  • 1894 - Paddlesteamer, the "Rodney", is burnt by unionist shearers in protest at it being used as a strike breaker. To read more - Click here
  • 1896 – Arthur Calwell, Leader of the Australian Labor Party from 1960 to 1967, is born in Melbourne.

  • 1933 – The Brisbane newspaper,
    The Courier-Mail, first appears.
  • 1941 - Party dissension causes Robert Menzies to resign as Prime Minister.
  • 1941 – Arthur Fadden becomes the thirteenth Prime Minister of Australia. (pictured)
