Kay Cottee returns to Sydney, the first woman to sail solo around the world.

stared her voyage leaving Watsons Bay at the entrance to Sydney Harbour with tens of thousands of well wishers folowing her out to the open sea.

Her historic voyage on the 37 feet (11 m) yacht Blackmores First Lady was the fastest sailing trip around the world by a woman and the first solo trip to round Cape Horn by an Australian woman.

Tragedy nearly end the adventure.
Aware of the dangers of modern-day pirates, bad weather, rocks and even icebergs wanted to achieve her dream sailed to her goal.

In the Southern Ocean, Cottee's boat capsized and she was washed overboard.

But a celebration of a lunch consisting of crab, mayonnaise and self baked bread and a prestigious Australian bottle wine, “Grange.” when Cottee rounded Cape Horn, the southernmost tip off South America.

189 days after leaving Sydney Australian, Kay Cottee became the first woman to sail round the world alone non-stop when she jumped onto the dock at Sydney Harbour to a hero’s welcome. More than 10,000 well-wishers greeted her.

Since her round the world trip, Kay Cottee has received numerous accolades.
  • In 1988, Cottee received the Australian of the Year Award.
  • In January 1989, appointed an Officer of the Order of Australia
  • The first Australian recipient of the Cutty Sark Medal presented by the Duke of Edinburgh.

In 1991, Cottee joined the Australian National Maritime Museum at Darling Harbour, Sydney and In 2000, Blackmores First Lady, was acquired by the museum, and placed on permanent display.

Cottee wrote two books.” First Lady”, published by Macmillan in 1989 and. “All at Sea on Land” published by Collins in 1998. These books told the story of her life in the ten years since the voyage.
