Pemulwuy was the leader and a warrior of the Bidjigal people, who started to show his resistance at the arrival of the first fleet settlement in Australia in 1788

As the colonies expanded through the area and settlements where established, the attacks began as the result of the settler’s 'own misconduct'.

Pemulwuy carried out raids as 'payback' for atrocities, stealing their lands and endangering tribe safety including the kidnapping of Aboriginal children.

Pemulwuy would plunder the settlers food supplies.

"Battle of Parramatta”

On 1790, a major eruption between British settlers and Pemulwuy occurred. On a raid, Pemulwuy and four Aboriginals attacked and speared Governor Phillip's gamekeeper John McIntyre, who later died of his wounds.

Pemulwuy was identified by his speck or blemish in his left eye as the man who throw the spear that killed the gamekeeper.

Pemulwuy continually led raids on settlers at Prospect, Toongabbie, Georges River, Parramatta, Brickfield Hill and the Hawkesbury River until early 1797.

In March 1797, British troops on the outskirts of Parramatta tracked and confronted Pemulwuy and a 100 of his men. This became known as the “Battle of Parramatta”

Pemulwuy was seriously wounded; his injuries consisted of seven pieces of buckshot in his head and body while five other men were killed instantly.

Pemulwuy was taken to hospital. Despite wearing a leg-iron and still having buckshot in his head and body, Pemulwuy managed to escape and continued to use guerrilla tactics to wound and kill British troops and settlers.

The death warrant of ALL aborigines

On 1 May 1801, Governor Philip Gidley King issued an order to bring in Pemulwuy dead or alive and to shot on sight any Aborigines near areas of Parramatta, Georges River and Prospect areas.

In 1802, a first mate of the English sloop “Lady Nelson”,, Henry Hacking shot and killed Pemulwuy where his head was decapitated and sent to England.

Who has the real head?
In 2010 Prince William announced he would return Pemulwuy's skull to his Aboriginal relatives.

Many believe the head is still in England with the remains of an estimated 3000 indigenous people whose body parts were bottled in the name of scientific research.

In the 1950s, Pemulwuy's skull was presumed to have been returned to Australia and was lost or stolen.

In 1998, a skull was identified as Pemulwuy's, but a controversy has developed.

A group of Aborigines from Taree believe that the skull identified is that of a Taree man and not of Bidjigal man.

Redfern’s Aboriginal undertaker, Allan Murray, believes it is Pemulwuy's and is working to have the skull reinterred and a memorial statue erected.

However Today, the exact location of the jar and its contents remains a mystery.
