Gabriel Marie "Gai" Waterhouse (born 2 September 1954 in Scotland, United Kingdom) is an Australian horse trainer and businesswoman.

Gai is better known as
daughter of Tommy J. Smith, a leading trainer of Thoroughbred race horses,

Thomas John Smith MBE, also known as Tommy Smith or T. J. Smith. was born on 3 September 1916. Jembaicumbene, New South Wales and on Gai birthday died on 2 September 1998 in Sydney, New South Wales

After graduating from the University of New South Wales, Gai worked as an actoress for a time, appearing in Australian and English television series and appearing in the Doctor Who and The Invasion of Time.

Start in horse racing
Returning to Australia, Gai worked and served an apprenticeship under her father for a period of 15 years and took out a trainers licence after a long-running dispute with racing authorities caused by her marriage to warned off bookmaker Robbie Waterhouse.

In 1992, Waterhouse was granted an Australian Jockey Club (AJC) licence and trained her first Group One (G1) winner Te Akau Nick on the October 5, 1992 later that yeari n the AJC Metropolitan race.

In 1994, after her father became ill, she took over his Tulloch Lodge stable

Gai Impressive record and highlights
  • She has since trained over 100 G1 winners
  • Won seven Sydney trainers' premierships.
  • She was also the trainer of Fiorente, the winner of the 2013 Melbourne Cup,
  • Becoming the second woman (and first Australian woman) to train a winner of that race.
  • Winner of the 2001 Golden Slipper trifecta with Ha Ha, Excellerator and Red *Hannigan - a feat never achieved in this race.
  • Equalling her father's record of training 156 metropolitan winners in a season, in 2002-03.
  • Inducted into the Australian Racing Hall of Fame in 2007, Gai was described as the "first lady of Australian racing".
