Julia Eileen Gillard
was the Prime Minister of Australia and Leader of the Labor Party from 2010 to 2013 and was the first woman to hold either position.

Gillard was born on born 29 September 1961in Barry, Wales. Gillard suffered from bronchopneumonia as a child and her parents were advised it would aid her recovery if they were to live in a warmer climate. Her family migrated to Adelaide, South Australia, in 1966 and later became Australian citizens.

Gillard enters politics
Gillard was first elected to the House of Representatives at the 1998 federal election for the seat of Lalor, Victoria.

In December 2006, when Kevin Rudd was elected as Labor Leader and became Leader of the Opposition, Gillard was elected unopposed as his deputy.

Gillard became the first female Deputy Prime Minister of Australia upon when Kevin Rudd lead the Labor Party to victory in the 2007 federal election

As well as being the first female atheist Prime Minister, and the first never to have married but lived in de facto relationship

Gillard is the first Prime Minister since Billy Hughes to have been born overseas.

The betrayal
On 24 June 2010, because
of Rudd's public ratings was in decline , Rudd was betrayed and lost the support of his party and resigned.

Gillard was elected unopposed as the Leader of the Labor Party, thus becoming the 27th Prime Minister of Australia.

Australia went to federal election at end of 2010 on a promise that there would not any carbon tax if she was elected. The result was Australia end with a hung parliament. This was the first hung parliament since the 1940 federal election.

Gillard was able to form a minority government with the support of a Green MP and three independent MPs

In the month of November 2011, Gillard's government imposed a carbon tax on the Australian people.

Karma strikes back
Gillard public ratings fell dramatically.
She became the most hated Prime Minister in Australian history.

At the same time Rudd and his supporters plotting in her downfall.

On 26 June 2013, after a leadership spill, Gillard lost the leadership of the Labor Party to Kevin Rudd. Her resignation as Prime Minister took effect the following day.

She also announced, in keeping with her pledge before the leadership vote, that she would not re-contest her seat of Lalor at the upcoming election, and thus would be retiring from politics.

Australia went to an election in September 2013 where the Labor party defeated resulting only winning 55 seats of the 150 seats vacated.
