Reginald John Lindsay OAM was an Australian country music singer. Reg has won three Golden Guitar Awards and wrote more than five hundred songs in his fifty-year music career.

He became the first Australian to appear at Nashville's Grand Ole Opry in 1974 and is officially recognised with a plaque on Nashville's Walkway of Stars.

Reg was born in Waverley, a Sydney suburb in NSW on the 7 July 1929. At the age of 2, Reg was given a harmonica from his father which he quickly mastered. He he learnt to play the banjo, mandolin, guitar and fiddle.

Reg career ambition was to become a stockman. On leaving school, Reg. worked for the Department of Agriculture in the Brands Register and studied wool-classing hoping to be transferred to the Northern Territory as a woolclasser or a stock inspector.

Changing career path.
In 1951 Reg entered and won a Sydney radio talent quest Australia’s Amateur Hour which launched his career as a singer-songwriter.

In a music career of over 50 years he wrote more than 500 songs and hosted various TV shows including The Reg Lindsay Country Hour in 1964 which ran for eight years.

Reg’s own TV program, Country Homestead ran for four years and earned him four Logie Awards.

Tribute to Armstrong
He was best known for his song Armstrong, a tribute to the historic 1969 moon landing by American astronauts, particularly Neil Armstrong, which is now included in a time capsule at the Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas.

The song was written by John Stewart, a member of The Kingston Trio, and gave Reg his first major hit, reaching No. 8 on the Australian Singles Chart in 1971. (watch video below)

Reg is also well known for July You're A Woman, Silence on the Line and Empty Arms Hotel. Reg recorded over 60 albums, six of which went gold and composed and recorded over 500 songs.

Awards and Achievements
  • Inducted into Australia's Country Music Hall of Fame in 1977.
  • Honour on the Television show “This Is Your Life” in 1978

  • Golden Guitar for “Male Vocalist of the Year - 1980 Country Music Awards Winner

  • Roll of Renown - 1984 Country Music Awards Winner
  • Awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia for his services to Australian music in 1989.
  • Known for his support of numerous charities and appeared on many TV telethons to help raise money for various community organisations.
  • The first Australian to perform at the USA Nashville's Grand Ol’ Opry.

At the age of 79 Reg died of pneumoniaon 5 August 2008 at Newcastle, New South Wales. Coincidentally, this date is also the birthday of the subject of his most famous song: Neil Armstrong.
