John Peter Farnham AO, formerly known as “Johnny Farnham” is one of Australian favourite pop artist.

On 1st July 1949, at Mile End Hospital in London, England was the first time anyone heard his voice. John weighed a healthy five pound one ounce.

In 1959 John's family emigrated to Victoria Australia and educated at Lyndale High School. During school holidays Farnham worked as plumber assistant and began a plumbing apprenticeship when he left school.

Johnny Farnham became a teen pop idol from 1964 to 1979

Farnham's first major and commercially successful I can recollect was listening to him being interviewed by 2UW’s, John Laws show. John then lauched Johnny Farnham’s song entitled "Sadie (The Cleaning Lady)"

"Sadie (The Cleaning Lady)" hit No. 1 on the Australian singles charts in January 1968 and remained there for 6 weeks. Selling 180,000 copies in Australia.

"Sadie" was the highest selling single by an Australian artist of the decade.

At age 22, Farnham was appointed Melbourne’s 'King of Moomba' in 1972

Change in direction
In 1979 Farnham changed his stage name from "Johnny" to the more mature John Farnham resurrecting his singing career.

In the pass, Farnham had minor hits and was involved with many stage musicals, until Farnham joined Little River Band 1982–1985 as lead vocalist replacing Glenn Shorrock.

Late 1985, LRB were in conflict again and Farnham left the band.

Becoming Australian Icon.
John Farnham finally hits the height of his career.

In September 1986 his solo single, "You're the Voice" peaked at No. 1 on the Australian singles charts.

The album Whispering Jack, released in October 1986 had become the highest selling album in Australia and held the No. 1 position for a total of 25 weeks and the highest-selling album in Australian history, with 24x platinum recording and sales of over 1.68 million copies sold.

Both the single and the album was Farnham's biggest international successes, reaching the top 10 internationally.

Whispering Jack was the first Australian-made album to be released on Compact Disc within Australia.

Whispering Jack held the No. 1 spot on the Album Charts during 1986–1987 and was awarded the 1987 ARIA Award for "Album of the Year, and was the best charting album in Australia for the decade.

You're the Voice was awarded the 1987 Aria Award for "Single of the Year". The song was one of the biggest hits of the year in Australia, topping the singles chart there for many weeks.

Success continues
Domestically he has remained one of Australia's best-known performers with a career spanning over 40 years.

Farnham is the only Australian artist to have a number one record in five consecutive decades with singles

Awards and recognisions.
Farnham has been recognised by honours and awards.
  • 1987 Australian of the Year
  • 1996 Officer of the Order of Australia
  • 1969 he was voted by TV Week readers as the 'King of Pop' for five consecutive years
  • 19 Australian Recording Industry Association (ARIA) Awards
  • 2003 induction into the Hall of Fame.

Aside from his recording career, Farnham performed on stage with lead roles in Australian productions of Charlie Girl, Pippin and Jesus Christ Superstar.

Australian rock historian, Ian McFarlane described him as
"the most successful solo artist in the history of Australian rock and pop [...] Farnham has retained an affable sense of humour and a simple, unpretentious 'everyman' charm which also makes him one of the most respected celebrities in Australian entertainment history."

Cronin with Christopher Skase lead a consortium to establish the Brisbane Bears. The Bears have since evolved into the triple AFL Premiers - the Brisbane Lions - acknowledged as the best AFL team of the modern era.
