Lionel Edmund Rose MBE born 21 June 1948. Rose was an Australian bantamweight boxer and the first Indigenous Australian to win a world title.

Rose was born and raised at Jacksons Track in Victoria, Australia. Rose grew up in hardship and learned to box and the fundamentals of boxing from his dad. Roy (his father), was a skilled fighter who competed in local tent boxing circuit and local agricultural shows.

A teacher, Ian Hawkins noticed Rose shadow boxing and was impress of his dedication to boxing present the 10 year old with a pair of boxing gloves.

In 1963, at age 15, Lionel won the national Australian Flyweight Title, under the tutelage of Frank Oakes, a Warragul trainer.

The next year, he was narrowly beaten in the final of Olympic trials that would have seen him represent Australia at the Tokyo Olympics. Rose decided to become professional and on 9 September 1964, outpointing Mario Magriss over eight rounds.

Rose steadily perfects his sport and then, on 28 October 1966, he met Noel Kunde at Melbourne for the Australian bantamweight title winning defeating Kunde in a 15-round decision.

Rose fought against the greats, Rocky Gattellari, and then Fighting Harada for the world bantamweight title.

On 26 February 1968 in Tokyo. Rose defeated Harada, winning on a 15 rounds points decision become an instant Australian hero and the first Aboriginal Australian to be a world champion boxer.

A crowd of more than 100,000 witnessed a public reception at Melbourne Town Hall. Surprisingly Rose could not believe that this crowd was here to greet him back home. He thought the crowd was there to greet the Beatles.

In retirement, Rose became a successful businessman, and he enjoyed the monetary benefits his career brought him.

In 2007 Rose suffered a stroke leaving him with speech and movement difficulties. On 8th May 2011, (aged 62) Rose passed away at Warragul, Victoria, after a long illness. Rose was given a state funeral .

  • Australian of the Year in 1968 - the first Indigenous person to be given this honour
  • In 1968 Awarded an MBE. (Member of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire)
  • In 2010. Rose was featured in a book of "Australia's Greatest People
  • In 1970 he won the Australian Amateur Flyweight title
  • In 2003 he was an inaugural inductee in the Australian National Boxing Hall of Fame.
  • In 2005 he was featured on the list of people to appear on stamp (part of the 2005 edition).
  • In 2005 Rose was also awarded the E9 title of 'King of the Ring'.
