Australian History quickies
8th January

4 major events in Australian History today
1800's
  • 1810 – The Derwent Star and Van Diemen's Land Intelligencer, Australia's second newspaper and the first in Van Diemen’s Land (Tasmania), begins publication which only lasted in circulation for 12 issues and ceased around the 11th June 1810.

  • 1878 – The telephone is used for the first time in Australia in Melbourne, Victoria.

The first test between Geelong and Queenscliff took place on the evening of 9 January 1878. Some of the contributions were heard clearly, notably a vocal rendition of "Yankee Doodle" at the Geelong end of the line, and "Genevieve" at the Queenscliff end

  • 1885 – John Curtin, 14th

Prime Minister of Australia is born in Creswick in central Victoria.

Curtin successfully led Australia through the period when the nation was directly threatened by the Japanese advance in World War II, and is today widely regarded as one of the country's greatest ever Prime Ministers.

With the end of the war in sight, Curtin contracted heart disease and died on 5 July 1945 at The Lodge at the age of 60.

To date, he remains to date the only Prime Minister to die within The Lodge.
1900's
  • 1904 – Death of art collector

    and philanthropist Alfred Felton.

Alfred Felton was born at Maldon, Essex, England, the fifth child of six sons and three daughters of William Felton.

Felton died on 8 January 1904 at St Kilda, Melbourne, Victoria, Australia
Alfred Felton had no direct descendants. In his will, he established a philanthropic trust, known as the Felton Bequest for the National Gallery of Victoria.

After the payment of legacies and probate duties, the residue of the estate was £378,033, a huge sum, the equivalent of about A$35 million at 2000 values

The Gallery selected a number of works from Felton's personal collection for retention by it, and the remainder was sold at auction, the proceeds being added to the Bequest.
