Australian History quickies
3rd December

3 major events in Australian history today
  • 1797 – George Bass sets
out from Sydney in a whaleboat with six oarsmen to explore south along the coast.

Bass sailed to Cape Howe, the farthest point of south-eastern Australia. From here he went westwards along what is now the coast of the Gippsland region of Victoria, to Western Port Bay, almost as far as the site of present-day Melbourne.

Bass also discovered the amazing natural phenomenon, the Kiama Blowhole, noting the volcanic geology around the Blowhole and contributed much to its understanding.

  • 1825 – Van Diemen's Land becomes independent from New South Wales, the Legislative Council of Tasmania is established and George Arthur becomes Governor.
  • 1854 – The Eureka Stockade takes place. ** Click here to read more
